Since the very beginning of video games, the industry has spawned many controversies as the market slowly crept into some pretty mature subjects, gaining attention from many worried politicians and the ‘furiosity’ of the inflamed media as they kept on blaming the video game industry as one of the main causes for the acts of violence and bad behaviour that have been happening in the world today. So now we’re here to bring you the ‘5 Biggest controversies ever in the history of gaming’, so strap on tight folks, this is going to be one hell of a ridiculous ride!
5. Custer’s Revenge

Released on 13th October 1982 for the Atari 2600, Custer’s Revenge follows the character with the name of Custer, represented as a man wearing nothing but cavalry hat, boots and a bandana accompanied with the sight of a visible erection. His only goal was to have sex with a Native American woman that was tied to a pole. Just by listening to the soul purpose of the game, you know that this was going to be one helluva’ controversial game….. and so it was.
Shortly after the game’s release, it quickly gained infamy, obtaining many negative responses from angry customers and women’s rights activists. Hilariously, the front cover on the sealed package for Custer’s Revenge even went on to state “NOT FOR SALE TO MINORS” with the game’s literature also stating “if the kids catch you and should ask, tell them Custer and the maiden are just dancing”, because that’s what dancing looks like…
Custer’s Revenge continued to receive large amounts of criticism from various Women’s Rights groups and Native American spokespersons, leading to Atari themselves attempting to sue the game makers.
4. Night Trap
Night Trap, released on October 15, 1992 was a game that was shrouded with angry reception from media outlets to politicians alike. The game was based around a group of young teenage women who decide to stay at Mr. and Mrs. Martin’s house for the night as you (the player) watch over them through 8 hidden cameras that are scattered in 8 different locations throughout the house. Your job is to protect these girls with the traps laid in each room from the enemy, the ‘Augers’. If you fail to do so, you are left with a bloodless murder sequence. Due to these “violent” scenes, the game has been heavily criticized and battered on by the media and was cited as an ‘encouragement to trap and kill women’ which then lead to the removal of the CD versions of the game from the two largest toy store chains in America, Toys “R” Us and Kay-Bee Toys.

3. Wolfenstein 3D Nazi Content
Wolfenstein 3D was and is still currently known as the “Grandfather of all shooters” as it established the fast-paced action and technical prowess commonly expected in the genre and increased the genre’s popularity. Yet, little did people know the ongoing resentment that surrounded the game in it’s early days of release. The game’s use of Nazi symbols, including the swastika and the Nazi Party‘s anthem “Horst-Wessel-Lied” as theme music lead to the withdrawal of sale from Germany despite it’s portrayal as Nazi’s as the enemy and Hitler being the main antagonist.
The SNES version of the game was then edited due to concerns from Nintendo of America. All the swastikas and Nazi references were removed and Hitler (The boss) was renamed “Staatmeister” and his mustache was removed also. Funny story eh?

Six Days in Fallujah, an unreleased historical third-person shooter created by Atomic Games was met with heavy criticism from British war veterans and peace groups shortly after the official announcement of the game in 2009 due to the background surrounding it. The game follows a squad of U.S Marines from 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines (3/1), fighting in the Second Battle of Fallujah over the span of six days in November 2004. Reg Keys, father of slain Royal Military Police Lance Corporal Thomas Keys stated that glorifying the horrific event demonstrated very poor judgement and bad taste. Tim Collins, a former lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment said that he would also oppose against the game’s release. Not long after in April 27, 2009, Konami dropped it’s role as publisher due to the controversial nature of the game.

1.Modern Warfare 2: ‘No Russian’ outrage
“No Russian” is the fourth mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The mission takes place in Zakhaev International Airport. The mission sees the player take part in a massacre of hundreds of civilians thus making it one of the most controversial levels in gaming of all time. The mission had been removed from the Russian PC version of the game, modified in Japan and Germany for players to receive a “Game over” if they killed a civilian and has been criticized in many other countries due to the violence surrounding the level.
