Nick,

Rhino for Mac will always have a default command set with a fixed set of commands. When providing support, we may ask you to switch Rhino for Mac back to the default command set so there will not be any confusion about what a particular menu item or keyboard shortcut will do. To change the default command set, you must create a copy of it. Maya's default measurement units are in Metric (centimeters, millimeters) but you can set them to Imperial (inches, feet) in the Settings preferences Working Units section. Note: You can change the default working units in Maya, which are in metric, but it is recommended to leave them unchanged as some tools in Maya have a set type, for example, Nucleus and Bifrost are set so that 1 unit = 1.

Unfortunately, there isn't currently a way to change the analysis units once they've been established.

You can explode the model to clear out the Scan&Solve data and join it back together to establish the new units. Of course you'll have to re-apply the restraints, loads and other settings.

Out of curiosity, if Scan&Solve would modify the analysis units to always match the Rhino units (scaling the loads into the new units), would this be acceptable behavior?

HI:

It sounds like Scan and Solve is missing a 'clear results' command which

clears the current analysis results without having to re-apply the loads, contraints

or other settings.

So you would clear the current analysis results.

Change the units

Then do a new analysis

Thx,

All,

Regarding 'clear results,' the [Purge] button on the Specify tab will clear solution results. It won't do anything for changes in units.

Try the latest version (1.4.1.8). It checks for a change in units in the Rhino document and prompts the user for guidance. It will also warn if unsupported length units are being used to model the geometry.

Thanks Michael. Since this is probably a rare occurrence it isn't necessary to have a feature for changing units.

Maybe a units item in the results tab and displaying the reaction forces will be enough to alert users to any inconsistencies. I only picked up on it when I checked the weight of the item. Those things are our human checks to see if it is being modelled and solved correctly, they're things that a computer can't really comprehend.

regards,

Nick.

We've all been there.... Your client gives you a PDF drawing to work off, and now you need to redraw the floor plan from the beginning. To make matters worse - there are hardly any dimensions. You ask, where is the original CAD file? There is no CAD file! But it has clearly been made on CAD. Do you think to yourself, should I pull out my scale rule? What if the floor plan isn't even at the correct scale? I'm already spending more time on this than I should...
Wouldn't it be awesome if you could take a PDF floor plan and convert it precisely to scale at the click of a button. Well you can, and we have the solution!
Read on how to import reference drawings into Rhino and resize them accurately to convert it to the correct scale. Once this is done, you can confidently measure, redraw and even build a 3D model from it in no time!

  1. Click right mouse button on the top viewport title > Background Bitmap > Place
  2. Choose your background file
  3. Arbitrarily choose two points in Top View to place the Image – The image is to be scaled directly after it is placed.
  4. You will notice in the command line that the background image command is still active. Click the 'Scale' option.
  5. Choose two points as a reference (scale bar is ideal if you have one)
  6. Type in the actual dimension> Press Enter.
  7. Test the scale by typing 'Distance' and measuring various known measurements of the drawing.

Step 1 Place Background Bitmap

Click right mouse button on the top viewport title > Background Bitmap > Place

Step 2 Choose your Background File

Save your PDF to an image file or take a screenshot

Step 3 Place the Image

Step 4 Scale the Image

Step 6 & 7 Type in the actual dimension

Type in the actual dimension. Press Enter. Test the scale by typing 'Distance' and measuring various known measurements of the drawing.
You have now imported your reference drawing into Rhino, and scaled them to the right size to continue working from in future.
If you have more than one image you need to import, try using Picture Frames. This will allow you to place multiple scaled images in the same view.
