I was wondering how to identify a 1911A1 frame by manufacturer? Most of the pistols I see originating from the CMP are Colt, Ithaca or Remington Rand. The slide is clearly marked, or has a part number. How do you identify the frames? Font style of the serial number? NO vs No, with an underscore? M1911A1 vs M 1911 A1 stamping? Serial numbers that begin with a “C” were.45 ACP and serial numbers that begin with a “W” were.455 Webley calibers. 4) Colt M1911 British RAF Contract: S/N W91,100 to W110,696 = Jan. 22, 1918 to April 28, 1919 (Approx. 10,000 pistols were shipped to the Royal Air Force from this serial number range and were.455 Webley caliber.). This is a correct Remington Rand 1911A1 that was shipped in 1943. It is one of the guns that has a serial number in the range that Colt also used, resulting in duplicate numbers. This gun appears to be all correct, with the correct Keyes grips, as well as Rock Island Arsenal rebuild and storage facility stamps.

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer’s rifle.
